DARKANE :
LAYERS OF LIES

Sweden's Darkane are back with their fourth, and arguably their best effort to date! Man, just when I was getting to the point where I thought I couldn't care less if I ever heard another "modern" Gothenburg, Swedish Death-Metal album ever again ("melodic" or not), out comes "Layers Of Lies" and firmly smacks me one up-side the head! I mean didn't these guys get the official "Let's Destroy The Gothenburg Sound" memo? Fuck, I know both In Flames and Soilwork did. ...Actually, come to think of it, they might have written that memo themselves. You see guys, you were supposed to water your shit down, and maybe add some "Nu" touches to it, all in a lame attempt at getting on Ozzfest, and selling your soul to hell's darkest minion, the insane egomaniac Sharon Osbourne. You weren't supposed to issue a ball-crusher of a CD such as this, thereby effectively laying waste to the rest of the tired-ass bands in this now over populated genre. Well, I guess we'll let you off the hook this time. Maybe you can get on board the ol' toboggan ride to crapsville next time out. Kidding aside, this disc serves to remind me why a decade ago, we all fell in love with the early works of bands such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. This CD is absolutely intense! The guitars buzz around you in a virtual cyclone of sonic mayhem, and as you stare at your speakers in shock, the vocals of Andreas Sydow just keep tearing layer after layer of skin from your awestruck face! No wussy "clean" vocals here kiddies! Every song on LOL is a solid slab of the highest metallic achievement! These guys are simply "in the zone". Some might wanna argue whether this is a "technical" Thrash or Death-Metal album, but it doesn't really matter, because at the end of the day, even the most "truest" fan of either camp is gonna fall under the spell of LOL. If ya need more info, you can find the band at, you guessed it, darkane.com.
