THE DARKEST OF THE HILLSIDE THICKETS :
SPACESHIP ZERO

Well, you gotta love that name…. The Hillside Thickets, are a bunch of costume-wearing, HP Lovecraft-worshipping, melodic punk rockers, from Chilliwack BC Canada. This is the soundtrack to a film based on an old German TV show called Spaceship Zero, it remains to be seen if the movie will ever be released. But what matters here is the Cd and the band. They have played with many people, ranging from "Gwar" to "Thy Might Be Giants", and from listening to their CD, its easy to see how. Vocalist Toren Atkinson has a great voice, one that is easily adapted to the many musical ideas found on this disc. As a reviewer, you often try to compare a new CD to a known band for description purposes, just as I thought I had this band pegged, the next song would blast that theory all to hell. For example, a lot of these songs have collage-alterna-rock written all over them (The Innsmouth Look). Others sound like "The Bare Naked Ladies" with a little more balls (Power Up, The Math Song). Then there are others that have a more "punk" feel to them (Slave Ship). Actually, "Slave Ship" could have come from the last Misfits recording session. So just when I'm thinking, "OK, they're a alternative rock band with some punk leanings, they hit me with "Kablam" which sounds like old Max Webster!!!! I shit you not! At the end of the day, you have an icredibly tight band, with a very well produced CD of catchy rock tunes that are not too hard, and not too soft, and should be on university radio station play charts across the country. If you wanna check 'em out, get your ass over to www.holycow.com/thickets pronto.
RATING = 7 Alt-Rock (Released 2000)
