DARKMOON :
BLACK DOMAIN

Darkmoon, from Switzerland, is the sort of band I crave on a daily basis. You could call them a Goth-Metal act with Black and Death-Metal leanings, or you could make an argument for calling them a Thrash band with Goth, Death, and Black-Metal overtones. Either way you slice it, you can probably get the picture. The band likes to call their sound "Darkmetal", and that's about as fitting a genre tag as you're gonna get. Think of the heavier Goth-Metal bands you know and love, bands like "Trail Of Tears", and "Crematory", and then add a touch of one of the classier Black-Metal acts, like "Dimmu Borgir", and you have a strong idea of Darkmoon's depressing sound. This is the band's 3rd demo that they have let loose on the Metal public, their two previous releases were, "Grief", and "Remains", both of which are long sold out. The band, which has apparently had the same line up from their start in 1997, is; Patric - drums, Gianrichy - guitar, Matthias - vocals, Christian - guitar, and Pascal - bass. The vocals from Matthias are of the gruff variety, just shy of a typical Death-Metal style, which adds to the overall heaviness of the four songs found here. The atmosphere invoked by these tracks is dark, very dark, almost too dark. Well, OK, nothing can really be too dark for us can it? If the Grim Reaper has a CD collection, I'm sure he has the full Darkmoon catalogue on his shelf. As demos go, this is way beyond what's expected in the quality of the recording, this sounds like any of the top-notch discs coming out from Nuclear Blast these days. In fact, this band would fit nicely on that label's roster. What more do ya need to know? If you groove to this type of stuff, then Darkmoon is a must. For more info, the bands official home is at darkmoon.ch, but unfortunately for us English speaking folks, it's all in Swiss.
RATING = 8 Dark-Metal (Released 2003)
