DARK SUNS :
EXISTENCE

I was actually quite shocked that I had not heard of this band before, as "Existence" is quite the disc, and according to what I've been able to find out, their previous release, 2002's "Swanlike" was apparently just as impressive. The band hails from Germany, and plays what most are calling "Dark Progressive Metal". Their sound is a mix of later day Katatonia & Amorphis, Opeth, Tool, Lacrimas Profundere, On Thorns I Lay, Insomnium, and a half dozen piano-twinkling Prog bands that I can't remember the name of. The sound, is well, I'm tempted to say Gothic, but that just doesn't quite fit. Goth-Metal to me has a more organic, or lush feel to it, and while this is definitely depressive and sombre, and emanates a great sense of loss and despair, it has a dryer, almost detached feel to it. ...I'm not sure if that last sentence made any sense to anyone but myself, but oh well... All in all, things never get as heavy as say Opeth at their heaviest, and there are long extended mellow passages, filled with delicate keyboards, where one might well forget that they are listening to a Metal CD. Existence makes a strong impression the first time out, but can't be fully appreciated without multiple spins, and preferably with your undivided attention. Casual listeners will dig it, but those willing to invest the time will find it the most rewarding. All you Opeth fanatics should be adding this to your shopping list.
