DARZAMAT :
IN THE FLAMES OF BLACK ART

I'm not gonna pussyfoot around this one, I'll just come right out with it. This CD is absolutely fucking brilliant! This is the first release to combine the best elements of Gothic and Black-Metal, and create something really special, that fans of both genres will have to acknowledge. Usually what ends up happening when bands try this, is that you get a Goth-Metal band with a few Black-Metal style vocal interludes that always seem forced. Or, you get a Black-Metal band that adds a few mellow passages in hopes of broadening their audience, when usually all they end up doing is turning away some of their potential Black-Metal fans, without gaining any from the other camp. Now, fans of pure Black-Metal are still going to turn up their noses at this, but for the rest of us, holy shit, you're gonna bust a nut, I swear! How they've created this sound, I don't know, but we have the best of both worlds. The guitars and the male vocals sound powerful, but rough... you know, that real evil sounding shit, that almost sounds under produced, which makes for good Black-Metal. On the other side of the coin, the female vocals, and keys sound lush and full, like you would want on a Goth release, and when they bring 'em together, it's magic (or should I say black magic). As you can guess, the music ranges from screaming guitar licks, and hell-born vocals that'll make your parents piss their pants, to tranquil melodic passages, that will sooth your animalistic bloodlust, if only for a moment. The songs themselves do not really follow the rules. You don't get your usual verse, chorus, verse, chorus. Instead, this disc plays out more like an opera, with each song acting as the next act or scene. This platter is instantly pleasing, but will offer up newfound treats each time you spin it. I don't foresee ever getting bored of this disc. And what makes this even all more amazing is that this Polish band is only a three piece! Well, Rush is a three piece as well, and they have made great music for over 25 years, so I guess they aren't setting a president, but still... wow. We have Kate and Flauros on vocals, and Simon doing the rest (guitar, bass, programming). Add to that, this was originally released in '97 by the obscure "Faithless Production" label. So it's really a re-release, but there is a bonus mix for "The Storm" done in 2002, that obviously wasn't on the original disc. The band also released a mini LP in '98 called "In The Opium Of Black Veil", I'm sure it's also worth a spin. I sure hope we get some new out put from these guys soon. For all the info you need, you can find the band here.
RATING = 9 Gothic Black-Metal (Released 2002)
