DAWN OF OBLIVION :
MEPHISTO'S APPEALING

How this great Swedish band made it under my highly-tuned goth-radar for so long, I have no idea. This is their 4th release (3rd full length). Dawn Of Oblivion put the rock back into Goth-Rock. Taking elements of all those late 80s and early 90s goth bands you know and love (Sisters, Love Like Blood, The Mission, etc.) and adding a more prominent guitar sound, Dawn Of Oblivion manage to create a modern sound all their own. Not all the songs are guitar driven (there are a few slower tunes), but the best songs have the guitars up front, with the vocals of Victor Fradera (who, in the band photo, kind of looks like Jyrki Witch, of "The Two Witches" circa 1992) switching from the standard, deep (Andrew Eldritch) "Goth-Rock-Voice" to a slightly harsher vox performance every now and then. The songs are truly powerful, and majestic, and full of deep lyrics on our favorite goth sing-along topics; suicide, Nuclear Winter, obsession, etc. These guys should by huge, they have the tunes to take the legions of Sisters fans, and make them their own, all they need is the exposure. RATING = 8 Goth-Rock (Released 2001)
