DBC (DEAD BRAIN CELLS) :
UNRELEASED

Gather round children, as I teach you of the days of yore. Once again I feel like Homer Simpson, teaching an uninterested Bart and Milhouse about the "Alan Parsons Project" (which I believe was some sort of hovercraft). DBC, are now barely a footnote in the history of metal, but they were, for a short period of time, a "buzz" band from Montreal Canada, that everyone thought would break out, and be the next big thing. The year was 1989, and their second album, "Universe", would become an underground hit. (The CD version also included the whole first, self titled album, as bonus tracks!!!) The appeal of DBC, was their technical expertise they displayed, while still pounding out super heavy Thrash-Metal. If you want to know where today's technical bands like Fear Factory, and the whole Math-Core scene come from, look no further. I had the great pleasure of catching this band live, in a shitty little club in Toronto, back in the summer of 1990… to put it mildly, I was blown away. Then, as quickly as they appeared, the band faded off the metal radar, never to appear again… until now. What we have here is 6 songs that were originally demos for a third CD that was never to appear. The songs have been sitting in limbo for 10 years, but now they have been re-mastered, and released as this short EP. While not quite living up to the greatness of Universe, these songs are good, heavy, solid pieces, and they're also the only thing in print from this historical band. A real pity to, as I had to sell my CD copy of Universe (along with a bunch of other discs) during a lean time in my university days. I recommend this to all you little metal heads out there, because if enough of us buy this, then maybe we can get our hands on a re-issue of Universe. Well, that's it for today's lesson kids, go back to your Slipknot CD. If any of you want to learn more about DBC consult your local library, or go to the band's web page.
RATING = 7.5 Technical Thrash-Metal (Released 2002)
