DEADFILMSTAR :
WONDERFUL LIFE

UK's Deadfilmstar, are a new force in the Industrial-Goth world. The sound is a cross between Marilyn Manson's more evil sounding stuff from the old days, and bands like Skinny Puppy (or even the Canadian band "Die Screaming" if anyone remembers them). The vocals, by "Mr. Filmstar", are harsh, you can make out the lyrics, but they sound like they're being sung by someone who is recently deceased, and has some gobs of rotting flesh lodged in their throat. Since '98 the band has released 5 demos on the world, but this is their first full-length outing. The band manages to create a creepy atmosphere with this new collection of songs... great Halloween listening material... but it takes a few spins of this disk before the individual tunes manage to stay fastened to your brain. Once they do however, there's no getting rid of them. Now that most bands in this genera (Manson, NIN, insert poser band here) seem to go commercial as soon as they get the chance, it's nice to see that there are new bands that are willing to keep it raw, edgy, and most of all, non radio-friendly. So, if you need a reminder, as to why you used to worship those bands of old, who have now betrayed you, give Deadfilmstar a try. It'll make you break out the ol' black wardrobe all over again. RATING = 7.5 Industrial-Goth (Released 2002)

DEADFILMSTAR :
THE INEVITABLE RISE & FALL OF FAKE & THE ILL-FATED TOUR

Well, it's been two years since their first full-length, "Wonderful Life" crept it's way into the Pad, but the group with one of the best band names ever, Deadfilmstar, are back with one of the most awkwardly titled albums of all time, "The Inevitable Rise & Fall Of Fake & The Ill-Fated Tour". When we last caught up with these cats, they were sounding like a grittier version of Marilyn Manson, and after two years not much has changed... not that anything really needed to. If anything, things seem to be maybe a tad harsher (which is a good thing), the songs a little tighter, and generally a bit catchier than last time out. Tunes like "Rockstar Dead" and "The Day We Lost You" are pretty engaging on the first spin, and help anchor you to the CD for subsequent listens, which enable the rest of the tracks the sufficient time needed, so that they too can invade the nether regions of your cerebral cortex. This is solid stuff, not mind-blowing, but if underground, Gothic-tinged Industrial craziness is what you're into, then this will appease that suicidal, leather-clad monkey on your back.
RATING = 7.5 Industrial-Goth (Released 2004)
