DEADPAD :
DEMO 2002

This is a pretty cool band. First off, what a great name, easily one of the best new names I've heard in years. Deadpad are a UK act, and have in their ranks; Mick Storrie (guitar), Betty Rogers (vocals), John Cook (bass / vocals), and Simon Duckitt (programming / keyboards). This is only a 3-song demo, but it really shows that this band knows what they're doing. "In My Shadow" starts things off with a serious bang, with some serious drumbeats, and Betty's unique vocals. I was trying to think of what to say about this band while I was spinning the disc, and I kept thinking of old Industrial bands like Godflesh. I couldn't figure out why at first, but it's the drum sound. It's programmed, but it is so heavy, and rhythmic that it just sucks you instantly into the song. The band uses a combo of female and male vocals. It almost seems like a cliche now, but with Betty's voice sounding so unique, it doesn't come off that way. It's not your average Death-Metal voice from the guy, and angelic voice from the chick. Betty's voice is harsh, but not Death-Metal harsh, just really powerful, and delivered with a sharp edge. John does some screaming, but again, not Death-Metal croaking. The music itself pulls from Thrash, Industrial, Nu-Metal, and even Goth. In the end it's dark, and it's heavy. A very professional first offering, and one that should easily get them some label interest. Definitely a band to keep on your radar. And if it matters (we all say it doesn't, but you know it does) yes Betty is drop dead gorgeous. For more info, you can find 'em over at www.deadpad.com.
