DEBRIS INC. :
DEBRIS INC.

OK, this is a fun one. If you're a Doom-Metal follower, you're probably already well aware of this strange entity. "Debris Inc." is an unexpected collaboration between Dave Chandler (ex-Saint Vitus) and Ron Holzner (ex-Trouble). Now, you may be asking why a teaming of two Doom legends would be "unexpected". Well, it's not the pairing up of these two guys that's odd, it's the style of music that they're playing which is shocking, it's not Doom-Metal, but rather old-school Punk! I know a lot of you, who are just hearing about this for the first time, are going zuh? But it's true, I swear! Basically, the band is Dave and Ron, with a revolving door policy being applied for the drumming position etc. At this point, all the drummers have also been pulled from the world of down-tuned Doom, and have included; Jimmy Bower (Superjoint Ritual / Eyehategod), Greg Rogers (Goatsnake / The Obsessed), Tony Costanza (Crowbar), Joe Nunez (Novembers Doom), and Barry Stern (Trouble / Zoetrope). So, what to expect on this debut offering? Well, like I said, even though the participants read like a U - S of "A" Doom-Metal hall of fame, that's not what Debris Inc. is about. This is more about exercising old influences that never quite fit into their previous bands, and having some long overdue fun. The three bands that sprung to mind on my first spin were "Black Flag", "S.O.D." (back on the first album, when they were cool), and to a greater extent, the cult Oxnard California Punk band "Dr. Know". (Who can forget their classic ditty entitled "Fist F*ck"?) Anyway, the down-tuned, insanely low-end bass that is the trade mark of the Doom genre, is still very much present here, but it's been combined with other lo-fi shenanigans, and silly, pissed off lyrics. It's simple, it's sloppy, and it's catchy, ...it's just music to party to. Is it a masterpiece? No, but it has a coolness factor that's through the roof! The disc has been getting some pretty mediocre reviews on the web, some even down right nasty, but I think the problem is that the CD only seems to be finding it's way to straight-up Metal sites. Trust me, it's not your average Megadeth-worshipping Metal-head that's gonna groove to this, it's the older Punks that are gonna be the ones to dig it, them, and the open minded Doom fan with a sense of humour still intact. I for one think this is hella-fun, and would highly recommend it for the next time you have a few buds over for a night of knockin' back brewskies. FYI, there are a couple of cool covers worth noting, "I Love Living in the City" (Fear) and "Nausea" (X) with guest vox from Karyn Crisis (Crisis / Skullsick Nation).
