DEEP EYNDE :
SUICIDE DRIVE EP

Coming out of Hollywood California, we have "Deep Eynde", a band that brings back that retro 80s goth sound, but with more balls, and more guitar. If the Bauhaus had a little more punk in their tunes, you would get something close to the Deep Eynde sound. The first track, "Dead Alive" is just so fuckin' catchy, it'll make you wanna get up and dance no matter where you are! (could be embarrassing at work) Another song that's an instant goth crowd pleaser is "Superstition", just a classic sounding song... you could swear this was recorded 17 years ago. There are also times on this short disc that I am reminded of early Sister of Mercy, and the Southern Death Cult. Fully recommended for fans of that retro goth sound, but who need something new in their collections. Fans of The Damned should also make sure to check these guys out. Great stuff. RATING = 8 Goth-Rock (Released 2001)

DEEP EYNDE :
SHADOWLAND

I was lucky enough to review one of the band's EPs a couple years back, and it has been haunting me ever since. So I was more than pleased when their new full-length disc showed up unexpectedly in my mailbox one gloomy afternoon. This disc is a bit of a departure for Duane Peters and his Disaster Records label. As you can see from my earlier review, the band used to be in full-on, retro Goth-Rock mode, and that's not exactly what Disaster is known for. However, this time out, the band is pushing more of a Punk sound, or as they like to call it "Southern California Devil Punk". I was a little hesitant at first, as I was quite taken with their retro, 80s-inspired Goth sounds last time around, and saw no need for a change. However, my fears were luckily unfounded, as these songs are, to put it simply, fantastic! ...plus there is still more than a tinge of creepiness to be found here. The lead off cut, "Suicide Drive" is the most Gothed out cut, while other tracks seem to be lifted straight from the "Misfits", and "The Damned", and I'll be damned myself if "Space Invaders" doesn't almost sound like a "Nekromantix song! So, as you must have guessed, the band's sound ranges from straight up Punk, to Goth-Rock, Death-Rock, Horror-Punk, and almost Psycobilly! Most importantly, the band blends them all together seamlessly, so nothing feels out of place or forced. The strongest thing the group has in its blackened arsenal is the vocal ability of Mr. Fate Fatal (ex-Kittens For Christian). Depending on what the situation calls for, the man can scream or croon like a seasoned pro. The other creatures of the night include; guitarist Daniel Deleon (ex-Calavera, The Insaints), drummer Hal Satan and bass player Sean Vomit. What more can I really say? The songs take hold of your brain on the first spin and never let go, so if you dig true Punk with a dark image, and spend your nights watching old Hammer horror flicks, then you're gonna love this disc. This is the best thing I've heard in months (and baby, I hear a lot!)
RATING = 9 Southern California Devil Punk (Released 2004)
