THE CREST :
LETTERS FROM FIRE

The Crest is another band that proves time and time again that Scandinavian bands kick ass. These Dark-Rockers are from Norway, the same land that brought you such great bands as Theater Of Tragedy, and Gluecifer. They have been around in one form or another since 1996, when they were a Doom-Metal band known as Swansong. In '98 they were know as The Covent, but really didn't get a solid line up until '99 when they also changed to The Crest. Essentially, what we have here is a female fronted Goth-Metal/Rock band. That being said, the bands that automatically spring to mind are of course the before mentioned Theater Of Tragedy, as well as the Gathering, and Lacuna Coil. The difference between these bands and The Crest, is that The Crest has deeper roots in the early years of Goth (80s). I'm not saying the band sounds dated, or like Sisters Of Mercy, just that certain elements are evident. Other bands that spring to mind while exploring this exquisite disc are later era Paradise Lost, and Moonspell. The biggest thing the band has going for them is vocalist "Nell", she has a voice that can soar to heights unimaginable, while still maintaining an abundance of raw power, most singers can only dream of. It should also be noted, not that it matters to the music, but Nell is a raven haired Goth goddess, that alone would make any live show worth traveling many miles to get to. The songs on this disc are epic in nature, with lush production. Tunes like "Butterflies & Dragons" and "Fire Walk With Me" will soon be Goth-Metal anthems. And even though I just compared them to a handful of other bands, The Crest have their own sound, and it's a sound that never gets boring. You'll be glued to your speaker from the first note to the last. An amazing debut effort, I can't wait to see where they go from here. For info on these gloomy rockers, check 'em out here.
RATING = 8 Goth-Metal (Released 2002)
