Michael Stipe, lead singer of the infamous REM has been the greatest influence in my life. I'll try not to put the guy on a pedastool considering the fact that I've never met the guy, but as an artist....well it's incredible. His lyrics are pure poetry ...note song "E-Bow the Letter" my personal favorite Stipe lyrics and from what I've read, he agrees. With lyrics like "I'll take you far this star thing" and "Run a carbon-black test on my jaw and you will find...it's all been said before."Whoo man. I've always respected him as a performer as well...he has an incredibly casual attitude. When I saw them play in Albany New York, Stipe walked around dragging the mic and then would just break into his usual flailing arm routine...that has always left me daunted. His sense of style Ya know. He's also a total liberal...a rarity these days...i gotta respect that considerin' i hold many similar beliefs myself.
Born in Athens Georgia, he began playing with the band in 1980. They've remained together since, save for the sudden departure of drummer Bill Barry. They've been saying for years (since the eighties) that they plan to break up at new years eve for the year 2000. If that still is true...there we've got just a few years left...so cherish it fans.. you must. As always, there is more to come on the man we call Michael.
