» CHAPTER TWELVE «
"Snap outta it!" I ordered myself. Later, I had finished my last pancake and he still wasn't there. So I walked upstairs and took a shower. I threw on something casual and went back downstairs, where Brian was standing patiently.
"I think the pancakes may be cold now," I stated. We sat down and ate. The pancakes were still warm.
"This is your mom's recipe, isn't it?" he guessed.
"Yeah, it's the only way to make pancakes," I said.
We didn't talk. Then Brian broke the silence. "She isn't very...bright... Your sister, I mean."
"My sister?"
"Yeah, I think popularity, guys and looks are her main interests. She's never heard of Lewis Carroll and she can't really tell me much about the world around us."
"Academics weren't really her specialty," I thought out loud.
"I like someone who can share my interests, but have their own opinions, too. You know? Someone who isn't a zombie." He paused, thinking about his words first. "What do you like in a person?"
"I'm not sure, I've really never been in one of those relationships where you both actually are interested."
"I don't follow what you're saying."
"It's always that I am just a girlfriend, but nothing more. And I never like the guy I'm with, but he likes me. Or vice versa," I explained to Brian, who was still contemplating something.
"I would never do that, I think everyone is an equal, no matter what status," Brian said. He sounded like he was promising me that.
"I dunno, maybe I'm just paranoid..." I took another bite of pancake. "Maybe some intellect, an outlook on life, free mind and opinions. He has to be funny, romantic, kind, faithful and trustworthy." I paused and took a deep breath. "I think my biggest mistake when choosing people is that I look at the outside for the looks, and not the inside, where the brains and personality really come from. For example I could see this hunk of man, but inside he's just a hunk of nothing."
"I think that's something that I do a lot, too," Brian declared, "I like the type that likes me for ‘Brian' and not for ‘The Rich and Famous Brian'. Some women go for the money. But what's a relationship without love?"
I put my dishes in the sink. "You know, I think love really bites."
"Is that opinion influenced by past relationships?" Brian put his dishes in the sink also and followed me to the couch.
