» CHAPTER FIVE «

Brian described a little restaurant that wasn't too far from where we were. It was called Mandy's. We pulled in and sat down in a booth. Just like a flash, a plump, rosy-cheeked waitress appeared as we checked out the menu. "What can I get you two to drink?"

"A decaf, please," I told her politely. Brian ordered the same.

She left and grabbed our drinks. "Are you ready to order?" We nodded at the same time and gave our orders. She left, scribbling down something on the thick pad of paper.

"So do you always start off sucky and then kick ass at the end?" I asked after sipping the piping hot drink.

"No, I dunno what was up today..." Brian set his cup upon the wooden table. "You always that competitive?"

"I am always a competitor, no matter if it's a game or if it's life," I told him, "But you know? Isn't life just a big game? You pick your allies and your foes. You make the right decision, you get a bonus or proceed to the next level. You pick the wrong choice. You suffer the consequences. There's the hero or heroine and there's the enemy or the big problem. But there's one single factor between the two. Do you know?"

Brian shook his head. "One's 2-D and the other's not?"

"No, you can't press the ‘Reset' button. You do what you do and you have to roll with the punches," I explained.

"Morgan, that is so true," Brian agreed, "And people say life is too short. You have to pace yourself." I nodded as the waitress served the food. I looked at Brian's plate. Fettucini Alfredo.

"What is it with you and cheese, man?" I asked him.

"I think maybe because it's made of milk and you know ‘Milk does a body good'." He chuckled. He must drink and eat a lot because WOW!

"Well, you sure look spectacular." My thoughts became words falling out of my mouth without me thinking about it twice. "That wasn't supposed to come out."
