» CHAPTER SEVENTEEN «
A.J. drove to the nearest cliff and pulled his car to the side of the road. He got out and walked to the edge. A.J. looked down at the moving traffic and inched closer to the edge.
"What’s going on?" Kevin asked, shutting the car door behind him.
"What are you doing here? Don’t you have Rebecca to chase after? Go find her, don’t waste your time on me."
"Look, I just wanna talk to you."
"Okay then, start talking."
"I don’t know exactly what happened, but I know what you’re feeling. You lost someone you love, but this isn’t the way to deal with it. It’s not too late to talk about it. I know what you’re feeling. It’s like, I lost my father or I lost my brother, doesn’t anybody care?"
"Kevin, I lost a wife and a daughter."
"That’s a big loss, but you still have people that care about you. Your mother, the guys, and me."
"We were only married for a year, and my baby girl was only three years old," A.J. added.
"A.J., all I’m asking is that you come back to the hotel with me and we can talk about it."
Suddenly, A.J. lost his footing and slipped. All he had to hold on to was a piece of rock. "Kevin please help me, I don’t wanna die!" A.J. cried as he began to lose his grip. He almost lost it when Kevin grabbed his hand and pulled him up. "Kevin… you saved my life."
"Let’s go," Kevin said. "We still have time to catch Rebecca."
"That’s the last of the luggage," Rebecca said.
"It’ll be okay," Mary said, putting her arm around Rebecca’s shoulder.
"No, no it won’t. I told you there were no good men. I thought Kevin was different. I should have known better."
"Kevin loves you," Mary said. "I just wish I could say the same for Nick."
"If Kevin loves me, then why isn’t he here? Why didn’t he stop me?" Rebecca cried as they found their seats on the plane.
Kevin and A.J. arrived at the airport. He ran down the long terminal until he reached gate B. "Ticket please," the woman said.
"I just need to talk to someone on the plane for New York," Kevin said out of breath.
"I’m sorry sir, but you’ll have to get a pass."
"But I just need a minute," Kevin pleaded.
"No pass, no admittance," the woman said firmly.
Kevin rushed over to the desk and got a pass. "I got one," he said.
"I’m sorry sir, that plane just took off," the woman said.
Kevin dropped in the nearest chair and started to cry. "Oh Rebecca, I’m sorry I took you for granted. She’s gone," Kevin said, looking up at A.J.
"I’m sorry man."
"It’s not your fault. Besides, I can fly to New York as soon as we get time off," Kevin said hopefully.
"But how will you get her address?" A.J. asked.
"That’s where you come in."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, if you can distract the woman at the front desk, I can get it from the hotel computer," Kevin explained.
"That’ll be easy for me," A.J. said. "Just tell me when."
"Tomorrow morning before check-out."
"Okay, great," A.J. said.
