» CHAPTER FOUR «
"Here, I want you guys to have these," Kevin said, handing Rebecca two necklaces.
"What are they?" Rebecca asked.
"Duh, they’re backstage passes," Mary said, snatching them out of Rebecca’s hand.
"Exactly. This way you guys can watch from the wings," Kevin said. "We’ll see you after the show."
"You want Rebecca so bad don’t you?" Nick asked after the girls had left.
"No, but speaking of puppy love, what the hell are you doing? I thought you loved Mandi?"
"I do. To me Mandi is the reason I wake up. She’s the queen of my heart. Without Mandi I’d be a total basket case. I feel very secure with her," Nick said.
"And Mary?"
"Mary," Nick said. He loved to say her name. "Mary is like the light at the end of the tunnel. She’s smart too. She knows tons of stuff about everything from the Civil War to the entire process of photosynthesis, to calculus, to every single one of Shakespeare’s plays. And Mary has such a good sense of humor; she always makes me laugh. And boy is she beautiful. From the first moment we locked eyes I felt as if I was being sucked in. I felt smothered by her beauty."
"She’s also taken and so are you, so forget about her," Kevin said.
"No, no, I can’t forget her," Nick said.
"Look, all I’m saying is be careful," Kevin warned as he headed for the stage entrance.
"Rebecca, Rebecca, I gotta talk to you," Mary said, running over to her.
"What?" Rebecca asked reluctantly.
"I’m so charmed. Nick has the most tantalizing blue eyes I’ve ever seen. And his smile is worth a million dollars. Rebecca, I feel so giddy around him. He’s so charming."
"I’m sure Christian would love to here about him," Rebecca said.
"Oh no, there’s no need to tell him. I mean yeah, I’m attracted to Nick, but I’m not attracted enough to jeopardize my relationship with Christian," Mary said.
"Just be careful," Rebecca warned.
"Um hi. I just wanna apologize for being so rude earlier. I was so angry at Nick that I didn’t even catch your names," Mandi said.
"I’m Mary and this is Rebecca," Mary said.
"I’m Mandi," she said shyly.
~ After The Show ~
"Excellent job," Rebecca said to the guys.
"Thanks," the guys said in unison.
"So what are you all doing tonight?" Rebecca asked.
"I’m hitting the showers then I’m hitting the clubs," A.J. said, pushing past the girls. He seemed to be in a big hurry.
"I was thinking you and I could go get some coffee and catch up on old times," Kevin suggested.
"Sure," Rebecca said.
"What about us?" Mandi asked Nick.
"Um, I-I don’t know," Nick said.
"Oh, excuse me a second." Mary took her ringing cell phone out of her purse. "Hi," Mary said. Her face would always light up at the sound of Christian’s voice.
"Well?" Mandi asked again, getting very impatient.
"I still don’t know," Nick said, holding Mandi close so he could look past her and see what Mary was doing. She began laughing at something the person on the phone said. Nick remembered that laugh. That was the way he made Mary laugh at the restaurant. But, he always made Mandi laugh too. Why did love have to be so hard?
