I got this idea from the members on the Kawasakimotorcycle.org forums. It really cleans up the back of the bike and makes it look a lot more modern. The process is very simple and can be accomplished in many different ways. I was a little worried that water might spray up on me, but this has not been an issue at all.
- Remove all the different items that are connected to the rear fender. License plate, turn signal housings, etc. Move the wiring to the side so you dont cut through it.
- Using the rear fairing as a guide, mark off where you will make the cut on the fender (a alittle bit above the rear fairing)
- You will cut the rear fender off above the point where you can see it. The fairing will hide the cut, so it doesnt need to be a "finished cut," just a rough hack. I used a dremel with a cutting disc to make my cut.
- You can also remove the rear fairing completely if you wish to reinstall it someday by unbolting it from the frame. Its a little more time consuming as you have to remove a lot more parts to get at it. I didnt choose this method, because the bike simply looks so much better that I will never put it back on. Also, whats left inside the rear fairing will still act as a water deflector, keeping water out of the inside of your rear fairing and the electrical inside. I would make sure to cover all of this stuffif you decide to remove the fender entirely
- Now you must mount the license plate. There are many different ways of accomplishing this. I used a strip of galvanized sheet metat that I glued inside the bottom rear fairing. It acts as a water reflector to keep water off of my tail light as well as holds my license plate. I also made two "L" brackets that bolt onto the sheet metal and hang down. Now you can use the existing license plate bracket, and bolt it on. I painted the "L" brackets black so the license plate appears to float, the silver was really reflective, and it looked cheap.
- Next, you would want to mount new turn signals and wire them up. What I've seen most people do is buy flush-mounts off of ebay. They look great and fit nicely on the panels on either side of the tail light. I already have LED turn signals, so I skipped this.
- You may also want to mount the reflectors. You know how hard it is to see motorcycles--especially at night!! These fit good on the side of the rear fairing.
