Chapter 3

The smile faded from the waitresses face at the guy in the doorways voice. She turned around slowly,

"Hey Micheal."

"Who's your boyfreind?"
Micheal asked surveying Max with a sarcastic, snobbish, eye.

"You know very well he's not my boyfreind, and if you wanna know his name ask him” Liz said in an annoyed manner.

Micheals gaze turned toward her angrily,

"well,"
Micheal asked Max still looking at Liz.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Max had been watching their exchange since this guy came in and was becoming angrier and angrier. It
was obvious that behind her annoyed stance she was scared and this guy was obviously her boyfreind but

he didn't seem to notice. That made him hate him. "My names Max, "he said cutting into their stareing

contest. He grabbed Liz's upper arm gently and asked for a shake. She looked at him with a grateful smile

and walked out without a glance at Micheal. "What's your name," Max asked after a long uncomfortable

silence, Micheal told them and they slipped back into same intense quiet as before until Liz came back.

"That'll be a dollar nineteen, "she said and Max went into his pocket. He pulled out some change and

began to count. He was embaressed. For some reason he didn't want this girl to see that he was totally

broke. He counted up to 98 cents. "Um.......I don't But Micheal cut him off with harsh laughter. "Here, "he

said and threw a dollar on the counter.

"If you don't have any money I suggest you don't order food, "Micheal said with a superior glare.

Max felt his face heat up in shame and he glanced at Liz and as their eyes met she looked away. He got

angry. He never wanted anyone to look at him that way. He didn't want anyone to make *her* look at him

that way. He got up with a angry sneer. "I don't need your money, "he said through clenched teeth. He

turned toward Liz and his expression softened.

"Can I pay you back, "
he asked.

" Of course,"
she said and was rewarded by his soft smile.

"I don't think that's good for business,"
Micheal said offhandedly.

Max turned toward him aggressively but stopped. This was her boyfreind and she was nice to him.

Max glared at him and stalked out." Really isn't good," Micheal said refering to his earlier comment. "He

said he was coming back and I beleive him. "Yeah right, "Micheal tsked. He's a criminal and they never

their dues. "I bet you he never shows his face again."
