19980301: Bookmark Sharing in Netscape
March/1998

Teachers often want to share a set of bookmarked websites with their classes. Sean's tip is a quick and easy way to do this. Bookmark the sites that you want the kids to access on one machine, using Netscape. Then copy the BOOKMARK.HTM file from the NETSCAPE or NETSCAPE\NAVIGATOR directory on that system to the server. An ideal place to put it would be in your 2Student share, so it will be read-only, and will be available automatically in the S: network drive. Change the Netscape or Internet Explorer icon on the student workstations so the command line will execute the networked bookmark.htm file. (For example, command line = S:\BOOKMARK.HTM.) Now when you start up your browser, you'll get the list of bookmarks which you wanted to share with the class, automatically loaded up in the form of a web page. A beneficial side-effect of this strategy is that your web browser will start up faster, since the starting page is on the local network and can be loaded considerably faster than loading a page from a remote server. |
