19980302: Internet Explorer Problem with LAN Web Shares On Locked Win95 Workstations

March/1998
Tech Note #2

The files are all in html, and can be run directly from a floppy disk or your hard drive. It's a Jeopardy-like game which teachers can easily customize to suit the curriculum they are teaching, or encourage their students to create categories and questions for. (For more information about the game, see the second article in the December/97 issue of Bits & Bytes.)

It didn't take long for someone to realize that, while the game works very well off floppy, and even better off the hard drive, sharing the game over the network would be the ideal way to implement it, since the whole class could access a central file, and the teacher would not have to make up multiple diskettes, or copy files over to each workstation. Unfortunately, the first lab facilitator who tried it did so in one of the new Pentium-based labs using Internet Explorer on workstations locked up with LockIt95 v2.3.

Here's what happens. You can load the starting page, INDEX.HTM, but if you click on the graphic link to enter the game, nothing happens. If you manually enter in the correct location for the game board, the game board loads, but again, when you click on any of the question links, nothing happens. If you unlock the workstation while logged on as Student, the problem remains. If you log on as any other user, so the system is unlocked, the problem disappears! I have verified this behaviour in the shop. In all cases, you can manually enter in the correct filename and load the question, answer, or board document, but the links to the same documents do not work.

Be aware that although this problem came to light using the CECMGAME package, it is not that software which is to blame. This same problem will occur for any networked web pages with links to files on local network shares, when used with Internet Explorer under Windows 95 locked with LockIt95 v2.3.

It seems fairly certain that this problem is directly caused by an element of the policy for the Student user. However, as of this date (March 2, 1998), the only solution we have found for teachers who wish to network the CECMGAME package - or any locally networked web pages - without unlocking Windows 95 or installing additional server software is to use Netscape for the client. The way Netscape handles "local" URLs is different from Internet Explorer, and whatever the problematic policy element is, it does not interfere with Netscape. Warren is looking into this problem, and if he finds a solution which would also allow the use of Internet Explorer, it will be posted in a future edition of Tech Notes.
