19980305: Headaches with Microsoft Publisher and Windows 95

Mostly, the problems have been with Publisher 97, I believe, but some of the problems may occur with other versions, as well. I won't pretend that the problem is necessarily licked, but after perusing hundreds of articles from Microsoft's Knowledge Base, we did find a couple tips which have proven helpful to Microsoft Publisher users. Number one: Save to your hard drive. Don't work on files which have been opened from a floppy or over the network. There are documented problems with doing so. By all means, use floppies and network drives to save your backup copies, but do your backing up with Explorer, not with Publisher. When in Publisher, work only on files opened from the local hard drive. And number two: If you've been following number one and are still getting error messages - such as "The disk is full trying to write X:\Filename.pub. Please save this file to a different disk and/or drive." - look for unnecessary TSRs loaded by WIN.INI. Hewlett-Packard printer setups are notorious for loading a Print Monitor in either the run= or load= line of WIN.INI. If the user doesn't need alerts popping up when the printer is out of paper, consider unloading the monitor. For more detailed information, consult the Microsoft Knowledge Base. There are many, many more articles about Publisher problems than these, but here are a few which I found informative: Article ID: Q76494 PUB: Disk Full or Source Disk Damaged Error - warns about possible conflicts with TSRs. Article ID: Q140154 PUB: "Disk Is Full" Message Saving to Network Drive - contains workaround procedure for Disk Is Full dialog. Article ID: Q136661 PUB: Cannot Save Publication After You Lose Network Connection - contains workaround procedure for Publisher bug when network connection is lost. Article ID: Q101829 PUB2: Error When Saving to a Different Floppy Disk - documents problems with saving to floppies from Publisher 2.0. Article ID: Q142891 PUB: Problems Saving Publication After Floppy Disk Removed - documents problems with saving to floppies from Publisher 3.0 and Publisher 97. |
