19980402: Windows 95 Diagnostic Utility

April/1998
Tech Note #2

MaryLouise L brought this one to our attention. Although, as noted previously (see January/98 Tech Note 6), Device Manager in Windows 95 does not always alert you to problems and conflicts, there is a utility which is included on the Windows 95 B CD which does a better job. It is called HWDIAG.EXE.

Microsoft Technical Article Q161765 confirms that Device Manager has occasional inaccuracies and recommends using HWDIAG.EXE if you require completely accurate system resource information. Here's what you need to do:

1.Copy the Hwdiag.exe file from the Other\Misc\Hwtrack folder on the OSR2 CD-ROM to the Windows folder on your hard disk.

2.Click the Start button, and then click Run.

3.In the Open box, type "hwdiag" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

One thing you should be aware of is that HWDIAG is not the most user-friendly of applications. When you run it, it will spend quite some time reading system information before it tells you anything. Just be patient.
