19980403: Intel EtherExpress 16s Under Windows 95 Update!
April/1998
|
We first noted a problem with Intel EtherExpress 16 cards under Windows 95 back in January/97 (Tech Note 3). At that time we had observed 3-connecter EE16s which Windows 95 had reset the EPROM so that only the RJ45 and AUI connectors could be accessed from Softset. And, at that time, the only solution we had found was to put the errant cards into a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 machine, and let the Workgroups driver rewrite the EPROM again. A somewhat cumbersome, though effective, solution. Since then, we have observed more problems, and not just with the 3-connector versions of this card. We have had 2-connector (BNC/AUI) cards which only showed RJ45 and AUI options in Softset, and others which - although showing the correct connectors - would not save the BNC setting on the card! We now have a better solution, and Simpsons fans are gonna love it. The latest version of Softset, which is actually Softset2, includes three programs: SOFTSET2.EXE, ISS1.EXE, and ISS2.EXE. To reset the EPROM on a 2-connector BNC/AUI EE16 adapter, run: ISS1 /BART To reset the EPROM on a 2-connector RJ45/AUI EE16 adapter, run: ISS1 /LISA To reset the EPROM on a 3-connector EE16 adapter, run: ISS1 /COMBO Don't take my word for it. Read Intel's Technical Document "SOFTSET Problems And Solutions". If you don't have the latest version of Softset, you can obtain it from the Intel site. We have version 4.1 on the shop server both in the programs directory, and incorporated into the latest version of the Network Card Setter diskette, in the disks directory. This information - plus EPROM reset information for other cards - is available on that disk when you run LIST. My only question here is - and understand I'm not a regular Simpsons watcher - just who is this "Combo" character, anyway? |
