19980604: Watch That RAM!
June/1998

Deon W sends this warning to techs performing RAM upgrades on 486s. Don't use EDO RAM! There may be some 486 motherboards which can function with EDO RAM but there are plenty which can't. Deon had one computer on which the EDO RAM caused Windows to be totally destroyed. Windows would not work properly until non-EDO RAM was installed and then Windows re-installed. I would just add a note to be careful about RAM upgrades to any system. For example, the new TX97 boards support both SIMMs and DIMMs, but not together! If you install both types together you will destroy the RAM! So, if you have any doubt whatsoever, check the manual before performing any RAM upgrade. |
