19981001: Sharing Bookmarks between Netscape and MSIE

Tip of the Month! Brian M. shares this information for anyone who has wished for an easy way to "synchronize" their Netscape bookmarks and their Internet Explorer "favourites". Brian writes: "I was reading an old PC Magazine and came across this utility called SyncURLS. For those of us who use both browsers, it allows bookmarks and favourites to be 'merged' into a common directory which can be accessed by both browsers." This is in fact quite a snazzy little piece of freeware, and once you get used to the way it's set up, I think you'll like it. Basically, the first time you use it, it will merge all your favourites and bookmarks into one database which you can then edit from the SyncURLS program. Once you have weeded duplicates and organized everything to your satisfaction, you then "export" the database to both browsers. You're done. Then all you need to do is run the utility whenever you're missing a bookmark from the other browser, and you're synchronized again. Technicians may want to install this utility in labs where both browsers are heavily used. In other situations, lab facilitators may prefer to have different links in different browsers. That's a school-based decision. You can download SyncURLS from our ftp site. |
