19981005: Windows 95 with MSIE 4 Hangs on Shutdown
October/1998
|
Brian H. ran up against an interesting problem: On some networked Windows 95 systems, choosing "Shut down the computer" caused the system to hang. This is a known problem with MSIE 4 and Windows 95, and there are two solutions. Please note that this problem does not affect lab workstations which were set up according to division standards, unless Windows and/or MSIE 4 were re-installed with the Windows Desktop Update option selected. Note also that the WSD#1 Backup CD does not contain a version of MSIE 4 containing the Windows Desktop Update. The Desktop Update contains features which are not suitable for classroom use. So if you've installed from that CD, you're safe. There are basically two ways to solve it. Either remove the Windows Desktop Update, or install Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1. To remove the Windows Desktop Update, follow these steps: a. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. b. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove. c. Click "Remove Windows Desktop Update, but keep the Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser," and then click OK. To install Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1, click here and follow the instructions there. For more details regarding this issue, Microsoft Technical Article Q178941 discusses this problem in particular, and Microsoft Technical Article Q165695 explains how to add or remove the Windows Desktop Update. |
