19981202: New Proxy Instructions ("WAIT!")

December/1998
Tech Note #2

New procedures are still being developed regarding the workstation web client proxy settings. Previously, Information Systems had requested we change the address from 206.45.100.195 to proxy.wsd1.org, this was incorporated into a routine on LockIt95 disk 2, and techs were encouraged to make this change.

Please hold off on this change, as the workstation configuration is still under review, and we will almost certainly need to change the proxy settings again before the firewall is activated.

Please note that running the routine on LockIt95 disk 2 will not cause problems in labs which have not been used as test beds for the new procedures. The routine does more than update the proxy settings, and the update is worthwhile. However, it now looks likely that the proxy settings will be changed, and if this is the case, all systems which have been changed to proxy.wsd1.org will have to be changed again.

Bottom line: do not set out to make changes to the proxy settings on web clients at this time. An integrated package is being developed and - if all goes well - may be available in February or March.
