19981204: Problems With LockIt 95 v2.3 (rev.98)

December/1998
Tech Note #4

Since school has resumed I have heard from numerous techs regarding LockIt95 installation problems. In particular, Ron (Sargent Park) H, Richard R, MaryLouise L, and Steve B-M have provided valuable information in tracking these problems and determining their causes.

When installing LockIt95 v2.3 (rev.98) on some systems, there are numerous errors during the install process, the Permitted Application list does not initialize, ever, and Teacher Applications either doesn't work at all, or the Teacher Access icons don't work.

There are two main causes for this.

One cause is the system is already partially locked up to begin, even though the tech is not aware of this. This results from the default settings for Windows 95, which will automatically download the policy file from the NT server the first time you log on to the domain. If you happen to have a policy file sitting on your server, you'll get it whether you want it or not.

Another cause is Active Desktop. The current version of LockIt 95 is not compatible with Active Desktop.

What has confused the techs who ran the LockIt95 install as team leaders during the summer - when it worked fine - is the fact that neither of these problems were possible during the summer. This is because, during the summer, (a) the team leader diskette created unlocked policy files on the NT server - thereby unlocking all workstations in the domain - and (b) none of the labs had Active Desktop installed.

If you are having the same sorts of problems installing LockIt95 as are described above, you should:
a. Log on as an unlocked user (eg. Teacher) and use the Users applet in Control Panel to delete all profiles except the one you are logged on with.
b. Use the add/remove Programs applet in Control Panel, select Microsoft Internet Explorer, and choose the option "Remove the Desktop Upgrade but leave the browser."
c. Reboot, and log on as a different unlocked user, but answer "NO" when asked if you want to save your settings.
d. Reinstall LockIt95.

Please note: The Active Desktop component cannot be removed from Windows 98, therefore LockIt95 is at this time incompatible with Windows 98.

A new version of LockIt95 is in the works. It will be compatible with Active Desktop, Windows 98, and it may even have an uninstaller! In the meantime, use the steps above to install LockIt95 with Windows 95, and do not attempt to install it on Windows 98.
