19981205: Uninstalling LockIt95 v2.3 (rev.98)
December/1998
|
MaryLouise L observed that running UNLOCK95 (see Tech Note 1.f in the September/1998 Tech Notes) does not remove all traces of the LockIt95 installation, and has some undesired side effects, notably the disabling of domain logon. UNLOCK95 is intended for Techs who need to temporarily remove all restrictions imposed by the LockIt installation, and the unlocking is completely undone when RELOCK95 is run. There is no uninstall for LockIt95 at this time. Choosing "remove" from the Add/Remove Programs list will not uninstall it. If you desperately need to completely remove LockIt95 v2.3 (rev.98) from a workstation, the following procedure will work: Run UNLOCK95. Reboot twice. Log on as "default user" (i.e.. a new user name and answer "no" when asked if you want to save settings). Use Control Panel/Users to delete all user profiles. Delete the <windows directory>\system\iosubsys\vmml95xd folder. Run Regedit. Under: HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run delete the "LockUtils" value. Delete the <windows directory>\RELOCK95.BAT file. Delete the file c:\locked.reg. Copy the file <windows directory>\taskman2.exe to taskman.exe. Delete the file <windows directory>\taskman2.exe. Delete the file <windows directory>\lockit95.exe. Delete the file <windows directory>\nl2fl95.pif. Reboot. At this point, any changes you make to the operating system or software should hold. However, be aware of the price you are paying to uninstall this software: You lose all your user profiles! If you don't remove them, they will still be locked up because of policy-invoked restrictions which are saved in the profile. Removing the policy file does not unlock all users. A future revision of LockIt95 v2.3 may have an uninstaller which will do this automatically, but I have some misgivings about automating a process which will - of necessity - remove so much user information from the hard drive. |
