19981206: Problems With the NT Update Disk

December/1998
Tech Note #6

Ron (Sargent Park) H and Neil B reported problems running the NT Update diskette, and these problems are worth noting.

In both cases the setup process would start copying the files, but it would fail extracting the archive. However, there were two different reasons. In one case, the floppy drive itself was defective, causing the archive to be corrupted. In the other, the floppy was fine, and the archive extracted correctly, but one of the target files existed and was marked read-only for some reason.

In both cases the result is the same: the archive extraction returns an error code and the setup process ends with an error message "file fails crc check".

I would ask technicians who are having problems with the NT Update to hold off using the current version of the disk until the next version is finished.

The next version will:
- run from a network share (so if your floppy drive is bad, you can run it from a shared directory on a workstation or another server);
- will not generate an error code if the target is read-only;
- convert the user database to the new division standards;
- configure the Netscape Proxy Server;
- re-configure Wingate 1.3.17 and update it if necessary;
- make any additional changes necessary for the new divisional proxy server/firewall configuration.

In other words, techs will have to run the revised version of NT Update on all the division servers anyway, so you may as well wait till it's done. (February or March, I hope.)
