19990102: Teachers Can't Write to the 2Student Share

January/1999
Tech Note #2

The standard practice of having a 2Student and 2Teacher share - the former for distributing assignments and examples to student users and the latter for receiving assignments from the students - is occasionally problematic. Brian M has had a number of teachers report problems saving files to the 2Student share. This "problem" is really mainly one of terminology and education.

When a teacher or lab facilitator unlocks a Student or StudentL session in Windows 95 using "Teacher Applications", only that session is unlocked on that computer. That educator is still logged on as Student or StudentL and therefore will NOT be able to save to 2STUDENT. In order to save to 2STUDENT, they must be logged on with an unlocked account - eg. Teacher/Sysop.

This assumes a standard WSD1 NT server configuration, in which the 2Teacher directory will have "Everyone: Change" permissions, and the 2Student directory will have "Everyone: Read; Teachers: Change" permissions. Unless the Teacher is logged on as Teacher, they won't be able to save to 2Student. Unlocking the workstation does nothing to change the user's permissions on the NT Server.
