19990104: World Book 1994 Access Denied Problem
January/1999

Ron (Sargent Park) H had an interesting problem with World Book Information Finder Ver. 3.0 1994, run from the CD on the server. Although the program had worked fine in the 97/98 school year, after the summer break, it only worked from the library Windows for Workgroups clients. On the Windows 95 (summer/97 vintage) workstations, access as STUDENT would fail. Access as Tech, Sysop, or Teacher worked fine. When logged on as STUDENT, they would get error messages to the tune of "access denied". Although we don't know precisely what caused these errors, apart from the obvious fact that something in the Summer 98 Routines must have been to blame, Ron was able to solve the problem. Here is the solution: In this case the CD network connection is W:, and the program installed on the workstation is in c:\info. a. Log in as Student, go to Teacher Applications... b. Edit c:\autoexec.bat, and - add the line: set infocd=w: - also add ;c:\info to the end of the Path statement. (If no path statement, add the line PATH C:\INFO) c. Create a new shortcut in Start Menu...\Student Programs folder, Target is "W:\IIFWIN.EXE". d. Edit the new shortcut so "Start in" is "C:\info". e. Delete the old shortcut, if any. f. Run Update Permitted Applications. g. Restart the computer so it reads autoexec.bat again. |
