19990106: Paint Loses Its Tool Box
January/1999

Richard R came across an interesting problem, which we've seen in a number of labs now. In the Paint program, the Tool Box does not appear, even though Tool Box has been checked to be shown. What has happened is somehow the user has relocated the tool box off the visible area of the screen. Resizing the display to 800x600 may allow you to find the tool box and drag it back to a more appropriate location. If that doesn't work, there is a surefire method, but it takes a little longer. First log on to the workstation as Tech, and open Paint to make sure the tool box is visible. Close Paint, and run REGEDIT. (Danger! Danger!) Find the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint, and export it to a file. Call it PAINT. Then log on as Student, unlock the session with Teacher Applications and run Windows Explorer. Find the PAINT file you saved previously and double-click it. The information will be imported into the registry, and Paint should function normally again. |
