19990602: It's Already Out of Date!

June/1999
Tech Note #2

The Spring 1999 Updates are already obsolete. Of the major components distributed, the following components should be updated again before year end:

  • Windows 95 Year 2000 Update (Availability: Wait for the next anti-virus installer for Windows 9x; it will be automatically included. If you wish to preinstall it, or install it without the anti-virus, it can be downloaded from Microsoft, or from the shop ftp site.)
  • Windows 98 Service Pack 1 (Availability: Download this from Microsoft, or from the shop ftp site.) Note: this update is not required for the new (Summer 1999) workstations. As of the Summer of 1999, all workstations purchased for Division use come with Windows 98 Second Edition, which includes all components of Service Pack 1, and more. Windows 98 Service Pack 1 will not be embedded in any anti-virus installer.
  • Service Pack 5 for Windows NT 4.0 (Availability: Download from Microsoft, or from the shop ftp site.)
  • Anti-Virus Software, Engine and DAT Update (Availability: soon - sometime before the end of October.)
  • Automatic Web Proxy Update (This is not a crucial update. The Spring 1999 version is completely functional and is compatible with most commonly-used web browsers in the division. The only exception is Internet Explorer 4+ for Windows 3.1x, which uses a proprietary registry scheme I haven't cracked. The update will not address that browser, but will address some minor issues including the addition of proxy for https and speeding up NT boot. Availability: I will let you know - watch the Tech Notes.)
