19990902: Windows 98 Second Edition Workstations Freezing and Shutdown Problems

September/1999
Tech Note #2

This note has been updated! See September/2000, Tech Note #1.

There have been numerous reports of the workstations purchased during the Summer of 1999 freezing and not shutting down properly. One strategy which has shown some promise is disabling ScreenScan. I have been in touch with Network Associates Technical Support and they advise: "We do admit that there were issues with the ScreenScan. There are no fixes for most of those issues except to disable the ScreenScan. I do not believe that this is a product that will be continued in the future. Sorry for any inconvenience."

You can disable ScreenScan via Display Properties, or you can wait for the next version of the anti-virus installer for Windows 9x. ScreenScan will be removed by default.

However, preliminary testing indicates that this is unlikely to solve all the freezing problems, and the shutdown problems are still being investigated. Microsoft has released a shutdown supplement for Windows 98 Second Edition, and has posted technical article Q238096 "How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems" in which numerous steps are recommended prior to applying the shutdown supplement.

You can try the methods detailed in the technical article and try the shutdown supplement by downloading it from Microsoft or from the shop ftp site.)

If anyone finds a reliable fix for these problems, let us know!
