19991001: CD Repair

October/1999
Tech Note #1

Tip of the Month! This one from Patrick L. Sometimes - particularly in classroom use where CDs are inserted and removed from drives frequently - a CD may become sufficiently scratched that its program stops working properly. If the CD has gotten dirty, it need only be cleaned, but if there are actual scratches on the surface, it requires repair or replacement. In the past there was little we could do except order a replacement CD.

Patrick has been able to restore damaged CDs using furniture polish. In particular, he has had success using Pledge Scented with Cleansers (any scent should work). He used the green can.

Apply the wax and rub vigorously in a circular motion - not from the center out as you would for cleaning. Keep applying wax until the CD can be read.

As CD-writing technology is now widely available, Patrick recommends making a new copy of the CD once it is restored, since the effect of the polish may not be permanent.
