19991004: Windows 95 Library Update

October/1999
Tech Note #4

This tech note is courtesy of our friends at Microsoft. I don't know how widespread this problem may be in the Division, but Microsoft has deemed it sufficiently important that they have posted it with their "Service Packs". The issue here concerns a set of DLLs which is common to many Windows applications. In particular, Windows applications created with version 6.0 of Visual Basic or Visual C++ or applications accessing Microsoft Foundation Class version 4.2 libraries are likely to be affected. The following information is taken from the Windows Library Update download site.

The Windows Library Update resolves an issue that can cause some third party software to behave unexpectedly after the installation of the Works Suite 99, Encarta Encyclopedia 99 (US only), Encarta Virtual Globe 99, Graphics Studio Greetings 99, and/or other third party software. Specifically, it resolves the following issues: Unexpected application crashes of some existing applications, because a newly redesigned runtime library may expose bugs due to programming errors in the third party software. Installing the latest version of Works Suite 99, Encarta Encyclopedia 99 (US only), Encarta Virtual Globe 99, Studio Greetings 99, and/or other third party software may have the undesirable effect of exposing bugs in AOL and Hyperterminal. This results in unpredictable behavior of these applications, including possible crashes.

Microsoft strongly recommends that all customers download and install this patch. Downloading this update will prevent possible crashes of existing and new versions of third party software. For more technical details on this issue, please read the Knowledge Base Article Microsoft Libraries Update: What, Where, Why

The Windows Library Update is available from the the Windows Library Update download site, from the shop ftp site and on the WSD#1 Software Backup CD 1, issue 16 or newer, in the OPSYS\WIN95\UPDATES directory.
