19991006: Service Pack Installation on NT Required

October/1999
Tech Note #6

Some technicians have observed that the Windows NT Server Prep Update routine must be run twice on a brand new server before all components are fully functional. This is generally due to component prerequisites for service pack installation.

For example, in NT 3.51, the Netscape Proxy Server will not install correctly unless Service Pack 5 is already installed. For another example, in NT 4.0, video drivers for newer PCI adapters generally include DirectX components, which again require the Service Pack to be installed first. In such cases - where the routine is running on a system which does not have a Service Pack preinstalled - these components will fail, because the Service Pack install occurs at the very end of the routine.

To work around this problem, you can either run the routine twice, or simply install the Service Pack before you begin.

And remember, any time you install software or drivers which access the original NT Setup CD, you must rerun the Service Pack!
