20000301: Firewall Requires New DNS Settings
March/2000
|
This note has been updated! See October/2000, Tech Note #9. For the latest information regarding the revisions to DHCP and TCP/IP network addressing necessitated by the transition to ADSL, please see the ADSL Network Config document at the shop ftp site, or contact Information Systems. This month's Tip of the Month is from Brian L of Information Systems! Technicians are advised that the implementation of the firewall has necessitated changes to DNS settings within the division. The firewall name services are now working. This means there are 2 DNS servers available for use inside the school division network. In all WSD1 schools, the order of DNS servers should be: 206.45.96.66 206.45.100.195 (This replaces our previous setting of: 206.45.96.66 204.112.178.11 130.179.16.67.) Due to the implementation of the firewall, the MBnet servers listed second and third in our previous DNS search order are no longer accessible from within the division. Outside the firewall, 206.45.96.66 will not work. If users wish to use a WSD#1 DNS server when dialing into MBnet, they are advised to use: 206.45.97.65 204.112.178.11 130.179.16.67 This change has been reflected in the version of the NT Server Prep Update diskette posted as of 1 March 2000 on our ftp site. Note that this change must be made both in the TCP/IP setup of servers which have fixed IP addresses, as well as in the DHCP scope for the educational LAN in all schools. If any schools are reporting Internet connectivity problems, this is the first setting which should be checked. |
