20000304: SuccessMaker and LockIt95

March/2000
Tech Note #4

While visiting a school, I observed a rather odd problem with SuccessMaker and LockIt95. After installing SuccessMaker, attempting to launch Teacher Applications (to unlock a Student session) launched SuccessMaker instead!

The reason for this is that the setup program for SuccessMaker contains two rather ill-advised components. First, it rewrites the system PATH variable and places the SuccessMaker directories before the system directories. Second, it uses the name START.EXE (a reserved Windows command executable) for one of its programs. This unfortunate combination causes SuccessMaker to run instead of the Windows 9x command-line program launcher any time the START command is invoked (as it is in Teacher Applications).

To fix the problem, you need to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Find the line that looks like this:
PATH=C:\LOCALCAI\BIN;C:\LOCALCAI\VDI;%PATH%
and change it to this:
PATH=%PATH%;C:\LOCALCAI\BIN;C:\LOCALCAI\VDI
This will put the Windows directories first in the path where they belong. LockIt95 - including Teacher Applications - will then function normally, so will Windows, and so will SuccessMaker.
