20000307: Remote Access Limited to 31.2 kbps Using 56k Modems

March/2000
Tech Note #7

We've had a few inquiries regarding 56k modems from schools who allow designated staff members to dial in to the school network using Remote Access. If the school currently has a 28.8 or 33.6 modem, there is no advantage gained by upgrading to a 56k (v.90) modem. A 56k connection can only be achieved by connecting to a digital modem on a digital phone line, such as is provided by most Internet Service Providers. Analog modems on analog phone lines are limited to the v.34 standard, meaning the best speed you can hope for dialing into Remote Access is 28.8 to 33.6 kbps.

For more information, see the V.90 Connection Requirements document on our ftp site.
