20000308: Servicing Pentium II and III Systems

March/2000
Tech Note #8

Techs are reminded that Pentium II and Pentium III computers use ATX-type power supplies. This means that the power button on the front of the system does not turn off all internal power. If you open a Pentium II or III system to re-seat cards or connections or to replace components, you must disconnect AC power, since the +3.3 V supply is always active on the motherboard. Some models have an AC main rocker switch on the power supply itself. If present, switch this off. Those which don't have an AC main switch must be unplugged from the wall, prior to servicing. Failure to follow this precaution may result in damage to the motherboard and/or installed adapters.
