20000310: DOS Network Connection Disks and Plug'n'Play

March/2000
Tech Note #10

If you are using a Workgroup Connection disk to boot a system with a PCI network adapter to connect to the network, you may have trouble accessing the network. If the network adapter is a Plug'n'Play device, you need to change the CMOS setting for PnP Operating System to Disabled. When you are running Windows 9x, the correct setting is Enabled, but that setting will in most cases prevent the BIOS from allocating resources to the device during bootup. Consequently, a DOS mode driver - such as the Workgroup Connection employs - will not find the network card and instead return an error. To circumvent this problem, be sure the CMOS setting for PnP OS is disabled until such time as you once again boot from Windows 9x on the hard drive. Workgroup Connection diskettes are available for download from the shop ftp site in FAT16-compatible and FAT32-compatible versions.
