20000314: Works 3 and Share.exe

Works 3 is, I realize, ancient history. However, I am still getting inquiries about this issue and somehow never got around to writing a tech note about it, so here it is. If you are installing Microsoft Works 3 for Windows on: Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, or Windows 98, you may get an error from the setup program to the effect that it couldn't find share.exe. If you get this error, Works will not install. If you don't get this error, the Works Setup program will complete successfully, but it will also have added an undesired line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Either way, this is a problem with the Works Setup program and not a problem with these versions of Windows. Windows 3.1 and earlier required the DOS SHARE.EXE executable to be loaded at boot to provide a file locking mechanism so that Windows-based tasks can communicate with each other. However, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and the 32-bit versions of Windows which followed use the enhanced mode driver vshare.386 instead. In order for Works 3 Setup to work properly here's what you need to do: a. Copy any file to your <windows>\COMMAND directory. (Or the C:\DOS directory for Windows for Workgroups.) b. Rename it SHARE.EXE. c. Make a backup of C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. d. Install Works 3. e. Copy your backup of C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT back to C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. f. Delete the file you renamed SHARE.EXE. If you have already installed Works 3 on a Windows 9x or Windows for Workgroups system successfully, look for the SHARE.EXE line in AUTOEXEC.BAT and delete it. These versions of Windows should not have this DOS utility loaded. |
