20000501: Changes in Paint from Windows 95 to 98
May/2000
|
Tip of the Month! MaryLouise has noted a couple of differences between the version of Microsoft Paint that is included with Windows 98 and the Windows 95 version. Both differences represent inconveniences for educators: (1) the default drawing mode is opaque instead of transparent; and (2) re-loading the active file no longer emulates "revert to saved" behaviour. To see the difference, try the following steps in Microsoft Paint: i. Open clouds.bmp in the Windows directory. ii. Click the rectangular selection tool and select an area of the image. iii. Cut and paste. (Ctrl-X, Ctrl-V.) iv. You should now have a white rectangular "hole" in the image and the "missing piece" in the upper left-hand corner. Move the piece so it covers about a quarter of the white space. v. Now select an area within the white space that includes a corner of the pasted piece. (Your selection is part white space and part clouds.) vi. Cut and paste again. (Ctrl-X, Ctrl-V.) You can now see the difference (1): In Windows 95, you will see the piece of clouds floating on top of the original image. In Windows 98 you will see the piece of clouds plus the white space cut floating on top of the original image. This is the difference between transparent and opaque. In both versions, you can toggle the appearance by clicking on the transparent/opaque selection buttons at the bottom of the toolbox (they show a little picture of a cylinder, a square, and a cube with the cube surrounded by a dotted line), or by selecting/deselecting "Draw Opaque" from the Options menu. Both versions support both modes of drawing. The difference is that Windows 98 Paint wants to default to opaque drawing and Windows 95 defaults to transparent. To observe difference (2): choose Clouds.bmp from the MRU list at the bottom of the file menu. In Windows 95, you will be prompted to save changes made to the file. Answer "NO", and the original bitmap is displayed. In Windows 98, you are not prompted, and the edited bitmap remains on the screen. In order to "revert to saved" in Windows 98 Paint, you need to first open another file, and then reopen Clouds.bmp. If there is a way of changing the default behaviour of Paint, I have been unable to find it. Anyone with information on this is invited to e-mail me. In the meantime, teachers, techs, and lab facilitators are advised to work around this problem by reminding students to use the opaque/transparent selection button to choose the desired drawing mode, and to open a different file first when reopening the active file. |
