20000907: Internet Explorer with Desktop Update

September/2000
Tech Note #7

Summer 2000 computer maintenance - all Windows 95 workstations:

Install MSIE 4.01SP2 with Desktop Update (minimum 486DX66/16 MB RAM) Use FREEWARE.BAT to ensure permissions set okay. When running FREEWARE.BAT, the best way by far is to log on as "Prof Admin", say "no" to the would-you-like-to-save-settings dialog, so that you are logged on as a (red screen) administrative user to the default profile. Keep logging on in this way through the various reboots that might be required. This will ensure that all post-reboot updates complete successfully. Also, FREEWARE.BAT contains certain registry updates which assist Internet Explorer 4 and 5 installations to complete successfully with machines that have LockIt95 installed. Again, logging on to the default profile as an administrative user (not at any level lower than Teacher) will help guarantee that these updates work correctly.

Note that to properly complete this procedure you need either the Summer 2000 CD or the WSD#1 Backup CD Issue 17 or newer.
