20001002: Hewlett-Packard 1100 Printing Slow in MS Works

October/2000
Tech Note #2

Here's another good tip from Ron H, who discovered this with Wilma W, and which was recently verified by Louis B. The HP LaserJet 1100 printer seems to have a problem printing Microsoft Works databases. All other applications can print to the printer at a reasonable speed, but Works databases take forever. There are a variety of settings you can try in Printer Setup, but most have little or no effect on this problem. However, Ron and Wilma found that changing the graphics mode from vector to raster fixed the problem completely. In vector mode, a database might take five or ten minutes to print, if not longer. In graphics mode, the same print job would take just a few seconds - ie. as quickly as a print job from any other application.

You can also reduce the graphics resolution from 600 dpi to 300 dpi. This reduces the size of the print job and will speed up printing somewhat, but it is the raster graphics setting which makes the biggest difference.
