20001010: FrontPage 98 vs. Anzio

October/2000
Tech Note #10

Deon W submitted this interesting tech note, which involves a surprising incompatibility between Anzio and FrontPage 98: If you install FrontPage98 on Windows 98 Second Edition workstations, Anzio stops working and, instead, displays a SOCKET UNAVAILABLE message. FrontPage apparently installs a different version of the 16-bit winsock.dll. Deon copied the original version from another working workstation and it fixed the problem.

Although the cases Deon saw specifically involved FrontPage 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, Anzio's web site indicates this type of problem may be caused by a variety of TCP/IP-based software, and is not specific to a particular version of the Windows operating system. More detailed info can be found at the Anzio FAQ web site.
