October/2000
Tech Note #11

This note has been updated! See November/2000, Tech Note #3 for related information.

For several months now, some techs have been noticing that when a locked user enters "http://some.web.site/" in the Address box in Internet Explorer 5, they may receive the following error message:
Access to the resource "http://some.web.site/" has been disallowed.
As was discussed at the last tech meeting of the 1999-2000 school year, this is due to a bug in Internet Explorer 5, which misinterprets the NoRun policy used to prevent users from accessing restricted programs. It is very simple to avoid this problem: simply type in "some.web.site" without the "http://" and the address will be accessible.

Microsoft has resolved this issue in Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer 5.01. For more information, see Microsoft Technical Article Q250915.
